USA Retirement Age vs Personal Finances

According to Charles Schwab, more Americans have answered the question "what is retirement age" than the question "what is my target nest egg."

Meanwhile, mandatory retirement age at the U.S. State Department has been taken to court.

Retirement Age for Social Security

The original retirement age for social security, under the Iron Chancellor creator of social security Otto von Bismarck, was 70. By 1980 the average USA retirement age had sunk to 62. In 2010, it was 64.

Politicians and journalists have been debating the issue of retirement age for Social Security and early Social Security retirement, mainly in light of the Federal Government's burgeoning deficits. Maryland Congressman Steny Hoyer, for example, in 2010 suggested raising the retirement age for Social Security, but not everyone agrees his proposal would really trim the deficit.

Another arguments for raising the retirement age for Social Security is that the United States Life Expectancy is getting higher and higher. This is true for both women and male life expectancy. Yet, Canadians are living longer than Americans. Rhode Island has come up with its own numbers.

Health is a powerful determinant of what is retirement age. A quarter of American workers age 60 and 61 aren't in the best of health. Yet, politicians are talking about raising the USA retirement age for Social Security.

What Are Demographics Saying?

Meanwhile, what are demographics telling us about retirement trends both domestically in the United States and globally around the world? Globally, French retirement age is one of the lowest in the world. What about Germany, Spain, Denmark, and Canada?

Delaying Your Retirement?

Studies from AXA Equitable Insurance and other firms show that in the USA retirement age is on the rise. If you wish to delay your retirement, how should you go about doing it?
