Simple and clean—that’s how Larry Ferstenou recommends you live your life. That’s How to Retire in Your 40s or 50s Without Being Rich. The following article is only the beginning of the wealth of information available to YOU in Ferstenou’s book You CAN Retire Young.
Will You Be Able to Retire?By Larry FerstenouBased on You CAN Retire Young
Most baby boomers, and especially those younger, have not yet fully realized that their retirements are in jeopardy. With Social Security facing insolvency in an estimated 14 years, employer-funded pensions continuing to decline, and few people saving enough, many are going to find themselves working into their 70s and 80s, perhaps even for the rest of their lives. Now the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way. Those who plan ahead will not only enjoy retirement, many will have the option of retiring early. And here’s even better news: the younger you are today, the easier it will be!
Why retire early? Freedom (and control) to do whatever you want with your life. It’s a great option to have in your 40s or 50s (or as early as possible), and one that most others will not have because they won’t adequately plan ahead. If retiring early sounds good to you, then how do you turn it into reality? You might start with the “3 Keys” to retiring young that my wife and I followed to exit the full-time workforce in our early 40s.
(1) Simplify your life: The fewer material possessions you own and have to take care of, the less complicated your life, and the lower your living costs. (2) Embrace financial self-discipline: Spend your money in a prudent manner and save (invest) as much as possible. Or to phrase it another way, live below your means. (3) Invest wisely: For all its ups and downs, historically, the stock market has been the only place you could exceed inflation by a wide margin and grow your money sufficiently to retire early. But it is equally important that you have a diversified portfolio appropriate to your needs.
Whether you are currently in your 20s or your 50s, retirement (and even early retirement) can be in your future. But the onus is on you to turn it into reality. Start living the “3 Keys” to retiring young today so that working the rest of your life becomes an option, not a necessity.
